St. Charles, IL -

A coyote that may be getting "too close" to an elementary school has residents and aldermen concerned.

5th Ward Alderman David Richards brought up the overly-friendly coyote at Monday's city council meeting.

"II got up close-and-person and very friendly with a coyote on Saturday," Richards said. "It let me get within about 20 feet in broad daylight a block away from Davis (Elementary) School.

"He appears to be quite comfortable in his situation on the west side. I do have some concerns with some of the neighbors."

Dan Vasil, a resident who lives near the school, voiced his concern at the meeting.

"I've seen it on several occasions at 7:30 (a.m.)," Vasil said, adding that he placed a call to police when he said it laying down near Baker Field Park. "It would get up and stretch and lay back down, and shortly there after kids were going to school.

"I haven't heard of it being aggressive," Vasil said, but he added that he doesn't want St. Charles to experience any tragedy over the coyote.

"I don't believe they should be in town, and it's foolish to wait until they're more aggressive," Vasil said.

Police Chief James Lamkin said he's aware of the situation and has been for a few weeks. He said it is his understanding that the school district has been working with someone to possibly get the coyote trapped and out of the area.

Mayor Donald DeWitte said the city will be in touch with the school district to follow up on the situation.
