The Colors of Freedom - SLIDESHOW

Red, white and blue. Together, in our nation’s flag, they stand as a symbol of freedom. But their presence is much deeper. These colors are ingrained in our culture, whether we notice them or not — from signs marking interstate highways to Popsicles shaped like rockets.
As the Declaration of Independence turns 233 years old, the poem “I am the Flag” by Ruth Apperson Rous helps us reflect on the values proclaimed July 4, 1776, and celebrated this week in our special photo essay:
“My colors symbolize the patriotic ideals and spiritual qualities of the citizens of my country. My red stripes proclaim the fearless courage and integrity of (Americans). ... My white stripes stand for liberty and equality for all. My blue is the blue of heaven, loyalty, and faith. I represent these eternal principles: liberty, justice, and humanity.”
