St. Charles, IL -

Rumors circulating that a threatening message written on a bathroom wall at St. Charles North High School listed names of several teachers and students caused a mass exodus Thursday morning.

Senior Will Mallory said the message, discovered by a teacher who had been at the school for a night class on Tuesday, listed more than 10 names of teachers and students who would be shot on Thursday.

“Nobody wants to be here,” Mallory said. “A lot of us are leaving.”

Student TJ Delisi left after a few classes.

“I was scared when I got here,” Delisi said.

On Wednesday, St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 Superintendent Donald Schlomann said the message was deemed not credible, but police and school officials are still investigating the incident.

Still, students did not feel safe in the building.

“It’s not worth the risk,” said student Nick Martinez.

Schlomann said there will be increased presence at St. Charles North High School for the rest of the week.

St. Charles Police Department spokesman Paul McCurtain said police officials are only at the school as a precaution.

“We’re making sure every door is secure coming in and we’re adding a security camera,” he said.

Handwriting samples from students are also being scrutinized. Parents have also been notified by the district.

St. Charles North High School has about 2,200 students.
