St. Charles North has been in existence for a little over a decade, but it’s hard to imagine that any wrestler to walk the halls in the future will have as much success as Tim Noverini.

The senior won his first regional title two weeks ago to match former North standout Eric Justice, and this past weekend he surpassed Justice by earning his third trip to the state finals, which begin Thursday at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Noverini suffered just his second loss of the season in a semifinal bout Saturday at the Glenbard North sectional (to the eventual champ). But he proved his mettle by winning a pair of matches in the backdraw, including a first-period fall to capture third at 152 pounds and punch his ticket to state.

“We’re extremely happy he’s downstate,” North coach Ken Moromi said.

A hand injury last winter slowed down Noverini at state, although with a 1-2 record he did earn his first win at state. Aside from having accrued experience in four years of varsity wrestling at North, Moromi said this state trip could be different because Noverini is totally healthy. Coach and wrestler have a plan of attack to get ready for the tourney.

“We’re mainly just going over my best stuff,” Noverini said. “We’re not trying any new moves. We’re just making sure I stay calm in my matches and not get frustrated, because when I get frustrated I take bad shots and don’t work my stuff.”

Noverini starts his state tourney run with a match against Plainfield North’s Nick DiNardo, who he has never faced, and his unquestioned goal to earn the second state medal in North history.

“The goal is to take first,” he said. “I’ve got some tough matches, but at state anything can happen.”

Jordan Scalice (120) and Wes Pasholk (220) also represented North at the sectional while Cameron Carlson (160) wrestled for East. All three saw their seasons end just shy of state.

High-flying duo
The St. Charles co-op gymnastics team will be well represented when the state meet begins Friday at Palatine High School.

Senior Kaylee Arnold scored a 9.325 on vault at the Glenbard North sectional to automatically earn a berth. Junior teammate Jesi Ortiz tallied a 9.350 on floor exercise at the sectional and had to wait until all sectional scores were compiled to punch her ticket to state with an at-large berth.

Sulaitis shines
Katherine Sulaitis was the only member of St. Charles East’s girls bowling team at last weekend’s state meet, but she represented the Saints very well.

The senior finished the two-day event at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford in 26th place overall with a total pinfall of 2,502. That after sitting in 30th place after six games on the opening day of the tourney.

On the first day, Sulaitis peaked early, rolling a 641 in the first session with a high game of 242. She followed with a 599 in the second set of three games that day.

On the second day, she bowled a 642 with a 259 game in the first session and finished the day with four games at 213 or better.
