$15,000 That’s roughly the amount of money the River Corridor Foundation raised to beautify the Fox River

The plan

A total of 260 locals donated about $15,000 to the River Corridor Foundation during the Bob Leonard 5K Run and Walk-a-Thon Saturday Aug. 6 at Pottawatomie Park.

The foundation, which works to create a lively downtown riverfront environment, had more businesses donate food and entertainment — along with raffle prizes that included trips to Hawaii, Colorado and California — to the event this year, said foundation President Jennifer Leonard. As a result, she said more people participated and bought raffle tickets, bringing the fundraising total up by about $3,000.

In previous years, the foundation typically raised $10,000 to $12,000 with about 200 participants.
“It’s a pretty good increase,” she said.

The foundation also gave away a prize for each first, second and third-place winner of the 5K, including prizes for the overall winner. In the past, Leonard said prizes were only awarded to first-place winners.

The impact

The foundation plans to use the funds for the initial stages of the State Street Creek Project, a portion of a larger project that’s about five to six years down the road for the city, Leonard said.

The project, located just south of Salerno's Restaurant, has been eroding away, she added.

Early stages of the project include engineering costs. Later on, the foundation plans to add a bike trail and a bike bridge.

Taking care of the first steps means the project will stay on the forefront of the minds of city leaders, Leonard said.

The foundation’s next fundraiser will be the first-ever Henhouse Prowlers Bluegrass concert Oct. 21 at the Arcada Theatre, an event that’s being done in partnership with the local Rotary Club. To get involved, call the River Corridor Foundation at (630) 418-5309.
