Wheaton, IL -

The Wheaton Symphony Orchestra returns for its annual concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. The outdoor program will be “The American Musical,” a chronological survey of musicals from early in the 20th century to the present day.

Included are composers Victor Herbert, George M. Cohan and George Gershwin. Selections will encompass a Rogers and Hammerstein medley and music from “My Fair Lady,” “West Side Story,” “Evita,” “Les Miserables” and “The Sound of Music.” Soprano Christine Pfenninger will be the vocal soloist. She has extensive stage experience and currently appears in “Sweeney Todd” with the Actor’s Theatre of Glencoe. She will make her second appearance with the Wheaton Symphony on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1 and 2, in the music of Rodgers and Hart.

The conductor for the Cantigny concert will be Philip Bauman, music director of the LaPorte County Symphony and Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony. He served as associate conductor of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra for 13 years.

One should bring lawn chair, blanket, portable table and choice of beverage. Because of high attendance at this annual concert, advance ticket purchase is recommended. Call Cantigny at (630) 260-8207.
