Jazz vocalists and recording artists Janice Borla, Jay Clayton and Judy Niemack are among the nationally and internationally recognized performers highlighting the 20th anniversary “Hot Jazz-6 Cool Nites” concert series from July 18 to 24 at North Central College in Naperville.
Each evening will feature a different combination of artists and musical selections, culminating July 24 with a celebration of the jazz series’ 20-year history.
Performances will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, and Monday through Thursday, July 21 to 24. For concert reservations and more information, call (630) 637-5620.
“Hot Jazz-6 Cool Nites” will take place in the new, 235-seat theater at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. The theater completes the college’s renovation of the former Grace Evangelical Church, dedicated to house the school’s fine arts performance, exhibit and curricular programs.
Each summer, “Hot Jazz-6 Cool Nites” features renowned jazz artists brought together to teach at the week-long Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp.
Among the sponsors is WDCB-FM 90.9 Public Radio at College of DuPage. The program also is supported in part by Hinsdale Center for the Arts.
Borla, a featured vocalist, has enjoyed acclaim for her current compact disc, “From Every Angle” (Blujazz), earning a four-star review in DownBeat Magazine, and selection as one of its “Best CDs of 2007.”
Clayton is making her fifth appearance, and another returning favorite is Niemack, who divides her time between Europe and the United States. In-residence instrumentalists include trumpeter Art Davis, a former featured soloist with The Ray Charles Orchestra; pianist Dan Haerle, an alumnus of The Clark Terry Group; bassist Bob Bowman; drummer Jack Mouse; and Belgian guitarist Jeanfrancois Prins.
