Scholarships

• John Donnelly of Geneva has received the Maurice L. Regole Jr. ’52 Memorial Scholarship to Marmion’s class of 2012, based on his performance on the scholarship qualifying entrance exam last December and his academic achievements. He is the son of Tom and Joan Donnelly of Geneva and attends Geneva Middle School South in Geneva.

• Christian Fitzsimmons received the Rev. Alcuin Deck OSB Memorial Alumni Association Scholarship to Marmion’s class of 2012 based on his performance on the scholarship qualifying entrance exam last December and his academic achievements.

He attends St. Patrick’s Catholic School in St. Charles and is the son of Robert and Sheila Fitzsimmons of Geneva. Fitzsimmons’ father, brother and uncles are Marmion graduates.

• Joseph Glemkowski received the Edwin and Laurina Witting Memorial Honor Scholarship to Marmion’s class of 2012 based on his performance on the scholarship qualifying entrance exam last December and his academic achievements. He is the son of James and Deborah Glemkowski of Batavia and attends Geneva Middle School North in Geneva.

Dean’s List

• Grace-Marie Ottomanelli has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, in the School of Applied Health Sciences. The minimum GPA requirement is 3.6. Grace-Marie is a community health major pursuing a pre-med program.

Achievements

• On Feb. 23, Marmion competed in the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Math Competition. The team finished in third place in regionals and is ranked fifth among all Division 2A schools in the state. The team has earned a spot in the state finals in Champaign on April 26. Team award winners include Jeffrey Gerold and Eric Schwendner, first in the Oral Presentation event; the junior-senior, eight-man team of Thomas Hymel, Rich Peck, CJ Heuman, Matt McHugh of Batavia, Jeff Gerold, Ryan Boone, Luke Friedman of Geneva and Colin King of Geneva, first; junior-senior, two-man team of Rich Peck and Thomas Hymel, second; the pre-calculus team of Thomas Hymel, Rich Peck, CJ Heuman, Taylor Weis of Batavia, David Iozzo of Batavia, second; the algebra 2 team of Jeffrey Gerold, Ryan Boone, Nathan McGinn of DeKalb, Chris Schmalzer of Batavia, Sam Van Dyck of St. Charles and Matt Kramer of Sugar Grove, third. Individually, Bennett Marsh placed second in algebra 1, Jeff McLean placed third in geometry and Thomas Hymel placed third in pre-calculus. The Math Team is led by captains Rich Peck, CJ Heuman, Thomas Hymel and Jeffrey Gerold.

• Allison Gibble and Rebecca Silkaitis of St. Charles have been chosen as presidential scholars at Illinois State University. A presidential scholarship is the highest award made to incoming students and provides $8,000 for each of four years.

• Marmion Academy’s Flannigan Rifles JROTC Military Drill Team competed in the second drill meet of the 2008 season at Springfield High School in Holland, Ohio. The team was named Honor Company for earning first-place finishes in five events and one second-place trophy. In the Armed Exhibition competition, the platoon led by senior Nick Zuccarini of Geneva earned first place honors. Senior Michael Meszaros of Batavia placed third in the Solo Armed Exhibition event, and the duet of Zuccarini and Pete Tate of St. Charles took second-place honors. Jared Meyer of Batavia won the Knockout competition in the unarmed division.

• Colette Doerschuk of St. Charles and Kelly Erikson of Geneva are social work majors at Valparaiso University and will be helping the community through their junior internship experiences this year. Doerschuk is interning at Spring Valley Center in Valparaiso, which provides shelter and supportive services to homeless families or individuals. Erikson is interning at Mental Health America, a statewide organization that was created to work for the mental health of all citizens and victory over mental illness.

• Karl Dusenbery, a student at Hope College, is studying at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan, during the 2008 spring semester. He is the son of George and Maria Dusenbery of Geneva and a 2005 graduate of Wheaton Academy.

• Vera Dusenbery, a student at Hope College, will be studying in Vienna, Austria, during the summer 2008 semester. She is the daughter of George and Maria Dusenbery of Geneva and a 2005 graduate of Wheaton Academy.

• Cadet Nathaniel Brand of Geneva recently was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant at Missouri Military Academy. He also was placed on the Merit Roll for his academic and military grades. Brand is the son of Daniel Brand and Susan Cechner of Geneva.

• Jeffrey Voss of Batavia placed third overall with a score of 578, earning him a bronze medal when he competed with Marmion Blue and Red teams at Chebanse. Voss also received the silver second-place medal as a JROTC individual precision shooter.

• Lucas Brandt of Batavia placed second in his age group, earning him a silver medal with a score of 562 when he competed with Marmion Blue and Red teams at Chebanse.

• Lauren Sperando of St. Charles has been awarded a 2007-08 Transfer Excellence Scholarship from Elmhurst College. It is renewable based on academic achievement at Elmhurst College. Sperando attended Elgin Community College and is the daughter of Steven and Colleen Sperando of St. Charles.

• Jeffrey Gerold of St. Charles scored a perfect 36 on his ACT taken in December 2007. He is one of only four students in Illinois (12,000 testers) to achieve this mark. Only 39 students of 370,000 testers nationwide achieved a perfect score on this test date.

Jeffrey is a Marmion Academy junior, president of the Latin Club, co-captain of the math team and a member of the varsity tennis team. Jeffrey attended Haines Middle School in St. Charles.

• Geneva High School senior Terence O’Connor has advanced to finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program competition. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. O’Connor was among the 16,000 students nationwide to achieve semifinalist status and is one of 15,000 students to be named a finalist. 

• Geneva High School’s Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Team has advanced to the state competition. The team placed second at the sectional competition at Northern Illinois University in February and will compete for the state championship at the University of Illinois on Thursday. This is the team’s first appearance at the state level since 2000 and the first time ever qualifying in the unlimited school size division. Individual winners were: first place in math and chemistry, Jake Tauscher; third place in chemistry, Rob Tauscher and Stephen Dumbar; third place in engineering graphics, Jay Kautz; first place in computer science, Alek Storm.

Students of the month

• Geneva Community High School presented awards to Students of the Month for March 2008. The award is earned by a student who stands apart, succeeds despite circumstances or contributes in some special way to the school. Students were recognized with a certificate and an engraved medallion at a breakfast ceremony on March 18. Students who have been recognized are: grade nine, Raquel Schape; grade 10, Jamie Potts, Gage Chojnackim, Rachael Tracey, Denise Alder and Trevor Cunningham; grade 11, Sean Nettleton, Patrick Gary and Trey Hemming; grade 12, Samantha Brummel, Olivia Laster, Chris Leone and Miles Pauli.
