• Dennis Cladis, a DePauw University first-year student from Geneva, was presented with the Dow Foundation Scholarship at DePauw’s academic awards convocation.
The Dow Chemical Company Foundation provides four-year scholarships to students who major in chemistry and plan careers in the chemical professions. Selection is based on superior academic performance.
• The dean’s list for spring semester 2007 at Winona State University has been announced. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must be an undergraduate enrolled full-time and achieve a minimum grade-point average of 3.5. Competition
• Geneva Middle School North’s eighth-grade WordMasters Challenge team placed first in the nation, above 304 other eighth-grade teams. Martha Christopher was one of only three students out of 28,000 in the nation to receive perfect scores on all three WordMasters tests.
• For the fourth time in five years, Heartland Elementary School students took first place in the Illinois State Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl competition. The team is comprised of 12 fourth- and fifth-grade students, though the competition is held at a fifth- and sixth-grade level. The computer contest covers math, geography, government, sports, spelling, science, literature, English, history, general information and trivia.
• Geneva High School students who were state qualifiers at the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Competition were Stephen Dunbar, Shaun O’Berry, Terry O’Connor, Kari-Lynn Ostgaard, Sean McClellan and Alek Stor, who won fifth place for computer science.

• Rachel Juszczak of St. Charles has been named on Butler University’s Spring 2007 Dean’s List. She is a student in the Jordan College of Fine Arts as a music performance major.
• The University of Kansas earned honor roll distinction for the spring 2007 semester has named Laurel Richter of St. Charles and Kyleigh Gould of St. Charles. Richter is the daughter of James and Roberta Richter and a graduate of St. Charles East High School. Gould is the daughter of Lori and Mark Gould and a graduate of St. Charles East High School.
• Friends of the Batavia Public Library recently awarded two Margaret E. Cooper scholarships to Melissa Clegg and Ingrid Johnson. Clegg, a Batavia High School graduate, plans to attend Central College in Iowa to study German and anthropology. Johnson will attend Smith College in Massachusetts as an undecided major with a minor in digital music. Johnson is a graduate of the Carmel Montessori Academy, Warrenville. The scholarship was established in honor of Cooper and is awarded to library pages. The scholarships were both $300.
• A group of Millikin University students experienced the culture and history of Argentina during a recent travel course to the country’s capital city of Buenos Aires. Joanna Zefron of Geneva, an athletic training major, traveled to Argentina.
• Army National Guard Pvt. Daniel A. Belair has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. Daniel is the son of Peter Belair of Geneva and a 2007 graduate of Geneva High School.
• DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., recognized a 1967 graduate, Craig Stokely of Wayne, for his outstanding community service and presented him with a 2007 Community Leadership Award during DePauw’s alumni reunion weekend in June 2007.
• Elizabeth Wiesolek has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after completing the Air Force ROTC program and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Lewis University, Romeoville. She is the daughter of Richard and Debbie Wiesolek of St. Charles. Wiesolek is a 2003 graduate of Grayslake High School.
• Central DuPage Hospital’s Auxiliary recently awarded $35,000 in scholarships to 18 local high school, college and medical school students interested in pursuing a career in health care. Scholarships were awarded to students attending a college, university, graduate or medical school program in the fall of 2007. Applicants were required to document academic excellence, plan to pursue a career in health care and live within Central DuPage Hospital’s service area. Area college students awarded scholarships included Jason Carroll and Paul Lukac of St. Charles.
