NORMAL – Rory Manion carried the IC Catholic Knights to the state championship match in Class 2A. Manion had 16 kills to lead the Knights to a victory in the first semifinal over defending state champion Deer Creek-Mackinaw at Redbird Arena Friday afternoon. IC won 25-22, 25-17 to advance to the final.
LA GRANGE PARK – Three Nazareth Academy baseball players signed letters of intent to continue their careers in college. Timothy DalPorto signed for Kent State and Peter Minella signed for Western Illinois. Daniel Rybski signed an NAIA letter of commitment for Indiana Institute of Technology.
LISLE – The accolades keep pouring in for former Lisle starting pitcher Alex Ventrella. Five months after the lefty ace earned the win in the final game of the Lions’ state championship run, the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association named Ventrella the Class 2A Player of the Year.
LEMONT – The Lemont Hornets 83-pound Gold team hadn’t played a close since the middle of the regular season against the Lyons Township Tigers.
PEORIA – For three gruelling months, Hinsdale Central’s boys cross country team continually proved that no individual was more important that the collective unit.
During the state meet Saturday at Detweiller Park, that all-for-one motto paid off as the Red Devils ran away with the Class 3A state championship.
WOODSTOCK – From one rivalry game to another. Montini faced host Marian Catholic in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs on Saturday and won 40-7. That victory sets up this weekend’s game against Joliet Catholic in the quarterfinals.
WHEATON – Even though she didn’t play in the back row a year ago, Molly Haggerty had a major impact as a freshman for the state champion St. Francis girls volleyball team. Now a six-rotation player 12 months later, she has transformed herself into even more of a dominant force for the Spartans and the Suburban Life all-area team MVP.
Players from Glenbard North, Glenbard South, Glenbard West, St. Francis, West Chicago, Wheaton Academy, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South comprise the team.
PEORIA – Alexa Haff saved her best race for last. The Hinsdale Central freshman – who established herself as the cross country team’s top runner early in the season – set a personal record en route to a second place finish at the Class 3A state meet Saturday at Detweiller Park.
ELMHURST – IC Catholic’s girls volleyball team only has three seniors on its roster, but those three seniors are essential to the team. Thanks to the trio of Delaney D’Amore, Rory Manion and Kimmy Martino, the Knights are headed to the Class 2A state semifinals, which are scheduled for noon Friday in Normal.
The DuPage Diamond Dawgs announced that IC Catholic junior Jessica Conenna has verbally committed to play for Northern Illinois softball. Conenna was an all-conference selection as a two-way player in the Suburban Christian Conference each of the past two springs.
OAK PARK – Fenwick senior middle blocker Sam Pethokoukis signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. She will be the second Pethokoukis sister to play Division I college ball. Gabby Pethokoukis, who played for Benet in high school, is a sophomore middle blocker at Villanova.
WESTMONT – This season for Westmont’s girls volleyball team was defined by grittiness and perseverance. A year after a postseason trip to sectionals, the Sentinels battled through one of the more rigorous schedules in the Interstate Eight Conference, playing several Class 3A and 4A schools during a grueling regular season schedule.
PEORIA – Saturday was the perfect end to a successful month for Downers Grove North’s boys cross country team. The Trojans finished a solid postseason with a second place finish at last weekend’s state meet at Detweiller Park.
BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook’s undefeated season came to a screeching halt on Friday. Perfect through nine regular season games and one playoff contest, the top-seeded Raiders were upset by Marist on Friday, losing 21-7 and bowing out of postseason competition.
