When new technologies are developed, products become more efficient and versatile. This is definitely the case with LED lighting; LED, or light-emitting diode, refers to a product that produces light about 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. With LEDs, an electrical current passes through a microchip, illuminating the tiny LED light sources. The heat generated is absorbed into a heat sink, so the lights last a long time and gradually lessen the light output instead of failing completely. Here are 3 advantages of LED lighting:
1. LEDs are small (about the size of a fleck of pepper), so they provide innovative design opportunities. While some LED bulbs appear similar to incandescents, others can be easily designed for a unique fixture.
2. LEDs emit very little heat; the heat sink absorbs the heat and dissipates it into the surrounding environment. LEDs don't overheat or burn out. Decorative LED lights for Christmas or other holidays consume less electricity than regular lights, and since they're much cooler, the risk of burning is reduced. The epoxy lenses over the LED lights are more resistant to breakage compared with glass covers. One LED string used this holiday season may theoretically be used for the next 40 seasons. Best of all, up to 25 strings of LEDs can be connected end-to-end without blowing out a wall socket or circuit breaker.
3. LEDs are directional light sources, so they only emit light and heat in one direction. This reduces the need for reflectors and diffusers that trap light. LEDs are much more efficient for use in recessed downward lighting and task lighting. They're also ideal for under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen.
