What are HIIT workouts?


High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, has increased in popularity recently because HIIT workouts burn more fat than traditional workouts in a shorter amount of time.

HIIT is a training technique in which you give all-out, 100 percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by short recovery periods.  The idea of HIIT is to go at maximum effort for a short period of time, followed by a recovery period and repeat. You can adapt it to whatever time and space constraints you have.

There are several key benefits to HIIT:

1. HIIT is effective

HIIT creates what is called an ‘after burn’ in our bodies. This means you’ll still be burning fat even after you’ve left the gym!

This type of workout can speed up your metabolism so you burn more calories all day.

2.  HIIT is efficient

You get more done in a short period of time. HIIT workouts can be done anywhere: at home, in a hotel room, in a park, at a gym, etc., and most are 30 minutes or less!

HIIT workouts generally use only your body weight, since the focus is on getting your heart rate up and keeping it there.

By working out in small bursts, you strengthen both systems, which translates to better endurance and overall strength.

3. HIIT is simple

If you have 20 minutes to spare, you have time for HIIT. Plus, there’s no equipment necessary!  Simple activities like running, biking and jumping rope are great, but you can be just as effective with your HIIT working with anything plyometric – like jumping lunges, high knees or fast feet. Plus, you can get your HIIT workout in anywhere!
