Taking a summer class can accomplish a variety of goals for different types of students. Some may be trying to graduate early, and taking summer classes gets them closer to the finish line more quickly. Summer classes provide students with the chance to learn about something that interests them, sometimes at a lower cost, and in a shorter amount of time. Summer classes also keep students' brains challenged and active in between regular semesters. At Morton College in Cicero, summer classes are available for anyone interested in a valuable learning experience.
"Anyone who meets the minimum requirement of a high school diploma, or the equivalent, can take summer classes at Morton College," said Michael T. Brown, Associate Dean of Student Services. "We offer an array of classes that stem from general education requirements, such as Art or Biology, to adult education classes."
Morton College offers two 5-week sessions and one 8-week session during the summer months. Students also have the option to take certain summer classes online.
Brown offers a couple of tips for students interested in taking courses during the summer months. "Since the courses are offered during shorter terms, the learning may be a bit more accelerated than during the Fall and Spring semesters," he explained. "The other important thing I'd like people to know is that summer courses are now eligible for financial aid! Details and requirements are available in our Financial Aid department."
As a newly hired Associate Dean of Student Services, Brown is working hard to help students feel as welcome as he has. "I've been with Morton College for almost five months," he said. "Already I've come to feel that Morton College puts the "community" in community college. I've been embraced like family, and that's the feeling we want all of our students to leave with."
