Worst habits for back pain

If you experience back pain, it may not be caused by a sudden injury but rather from everyday bad habits.

According to Be Fit Physical Therapy & Pilates, Ltd. of Downers Grove, one the biggest mistakes is ignoring your back pain.

By attempting to counter your pain with over the counter medications, prescription medicine or injections, you don’t address the real issue. If you don’t correct what is causing the pain, this can lead to other issues.

“There's totally a place for meds and injections, but it's usually better to go more conservative and try PT first. Then, we can work on the bad habits!” said Mary Lou Savino Owner and President of Bet Fit Physical Therapy and Pilates.

Consider your body position when you are texting. You likely have rounded shoulders and forward head posture. Poor sitting and standing posture and even texting in a slouched position are bad habits that can lead to back pain.

When you are lifting a heavy object, you’ve likely heard the recommendation to lift with your legs and not with your back. The same advice can be applied to carrying laundry baskets, groceries or exercising with weights.

Wearing high heels changes our center of gravity and puts stress on the back. The weight of your purse can also be a contributing factor to your back pain. Consider lightening your load and not carrying more than 5 percent of your weight on one side. Use a backpack to relieve tension and distribute weight properly.

“The other thing is that people with back pain or issues often don't know how to engage their core muscles, which are the deeper muscles of the spine. Transverse abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor/hip rotators and the diaphragm,” Savino said. “This means they substitute or compensate with other muscles to do the job of the core muscles - which is to stabilize the spine.”
