In case you didn’t know, Saturday, February 23 is National Dog Biscuit Day (also known as International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day).
The history of the dog biscuit dates to the 1800s when dog owners gave their pets grain biscuits, which often were stale or moldy. In the latter part of the century American James Spratt witnessed stray dogs eating hardtack, which was a cracker used on sailing ships to feed sailors because it was long-lasting.
Spratt’s cakes were a mix of meat, grains, and vegetables and called “Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes.” in 1908, the F.H. Bennett Biscuit Co of New York began making hard bone-shaped dog biscuits made of milk and meat products. Fast forward to modern times, and dog biscuits are not only a treat, but they also clean dogs’ teeth and provide your dog with vitamins and minerals, as well as a tasty treat.
So, to honor your furry pet who brings you more happiness than you can imagine, why not whip up a batch of homemade dog biscuits.

Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats
2 ½ cups oat flour
½ cup unsweetened applesauce
¾ cup pumpkin puree
3 tbsp peanut butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients well. Roll out ½ inch thick and cut individual biscuits with a cookie cutter. Place biscuits on a cookie sheet and bake for 40 minutes or until crunchy. Cool completely. Bestow on your fur baby.
Biscuits should last up to a week in a sealed container.
