Ways to boost energy and happiness in the winter months

Shorter days and colder weather can drain your energy. By February, the excitement of a New Year has worn off and you may be feeling the winter blues.

Here are some ways to boost your energy and increase your happiness in winter while you wait for warmer spring days ahead.

1. Eat smarter.

Foods high in sugar and carbohydrates may provide a temporary feeling of euphoria, they ultimately lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. Eat smarter by adding whole grains, vegetables, proteins and B vitamins to your diet.

You will have more energy if you skip the winter comfort foods and increase your servings of fruit and vegetables. Classic stews are great options because they’re loaded with plenty of vegetables!

2. Find workout motivation.

It may be more challenging to get to the gym when the temperature is below zero, but exercise is a proven mood booster! Give yourself an incentive. Commit to your workout schedule at the start of each week, and reward yourself with a small treat, like a manicure or a massage.

Be Fit Physical Therapy & Pilates, located in Downers Grove, provides fitness training, massage and weight loss services in addition to physical therapy treatment. Be Fit Physical Therapy & Pilates provides individual attention to help you find lasting, positive changes with your health.

3. Brighten your day.

A lack of sunlight causes your brain to produce more melatonin, which makes you sleepy. Open your blinds or curtains to let in more sunlight, and get outdoors in natural daylight as much as possible. Even a brief lunchtime walk can help!

Wear bright-colored clothing can also help to boost your mood. Studies show our mood can be affected depending on what we wear. Donate clothes that no longer fit and focus on shopping for clothes that emphasize the parts of your body that you love!
