A lively election season is under way; and it seems like everyone has an opinion on a candidate or an issue.
This should be music to the ears of anyone who values the democratic process. The dynamic that drives our system of government isn’t the triumph of one ideology over another, but rather the constant exchange of ideas.
By offering our views and listening to those of others, we broaden our understanding of what policies work more effectively and which candidates are more likely to implement them. No idea is so good that it wouldn’t be improved by at least considering an alternative viewpoint. Through the experience, you’ll either confirm what you already believed to be true or discover something unique that you hadn’t thought of before.
Suburban Life Publications has long prided itself on being a marketplace of differing opinions. We regularly print letters to the editor on various topics; and we’re convinced this fosters a necessary debate.
We want to continue receiving your letters throughout the campaign. People submitting letters should limit them to no more than 250 words. Letters must also include the writer’s name, the town where he or she lives and a telephone number. (We don’t publish phone numbers, but use them to verify the authenticity of the letter).
When writing letters, remember to support points you’re making with facts. Name-calling doesn’t prove anything and makes you sound childish. And while you’re certainly entitled to disagree with someone’s views, be respectful of other people.
You may submit letters to letters@gatehousemedia.com. We look forward to reading your ideas.
