Downers Grove, IL -

Benet overcame early deficits in each set to move on to Thursday's Downers Grove South sectional title match with a 25-13, 25-18 win over the host Mustangs on Tuesday.

The Mustangs, who finish their season with a 28-8 record, were led by Courtney Gosewisch's five kills and eight digs and four kills each from Mo Oestermeyer and Kelsey Safranek.

Benet (37-1) trailed 5-2 in the first set after a Katherine Gosewisch block kill, but took command from there as a Natalie Patzin kill was followed by five straight service points by Jessica Jendryk for an 8-5 lead.

Then with the margin 14-10, Courtney Finke's four serves in a row began a decisive 11-3 run to end the first set. A Val Mattalino kill on an overpass capped set point.

Downers South led 8-7 in the second set after an Oestermeyer kill, but Benet snuck ahead 13-11 before Finke's serving again widened the gap. Her six straight serves for a 19-11 lead included consecutive aces, and the Mustangs never drew closer than five points the rest of the way. Ariana Mankus' kill put away match point for Benet, one of her four kills during the Redwings' 13-7 closing run.
