A 25-year-old Kane County man pleaded guilty Wednesday to leaving the scene of a September drunken driving crash in West Chicago that killed a Lisle woman and injured a Warrenville man.
Luis Alvarez, who lives near Montgomery, fled to Michigan after his sport utility vehicle struck a motorcycle carrying William Rezac, 55, and his passenger, Deborah Atkinson, 51, at about 8 p.m. Sept. 22 near Route 59 and Stimmel Street. He was arrested at a relative’s home in Grand Rapids, Mich., just before midnight that day.
Alvarez is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He faces up to 14 years in prison when DuPage Circuit Judge Perry Thompson sentences him Wednesday, Sept. 10, said Paul Darrah, a spokesman for the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
He remains in custody in DuPage County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Atkinson was killed in the crash, and Rezac was airlifted to Loyola University Medical in Maywood in critical condition.
Rezac was also charged with driving under the influence in connection with the crash. He pleaded not guilty May 19, and his next court date is Thursday, Aug. 11.
He did not immediately return a call for comment.
