It might have taken a while, but summer is finally in full force this week with the first 90-degree heat wave of the year.
Temperatures in the area are expected to break 90 degrees today through Friday before dipping back into the 80s over the weekend.
It will be the first time this year that temperatures have been so high for consecutive days, said Gino Izzo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville.
Prior to Tuesday, June 12 was the only day in 2008 to breach 90 degrees.
One saving grace, Izzo said, is that the humidity will not be unbearable, never getting much above 50 percent.
“It will be humid, but it’s not going to be remarkably so,” he said. “It’s going to feel pretty warm.
“I would call it an average, typical Chicago heat wave.”
The impending heat has not spurred Wheaton and Glen Ellyn to call for designated cooling centers as they have in past years on scorching summer days.
Glen Ellyn Village Manager Steve Jones said that there is no specific threshold requiring the centers and that many factors are considered.
“When you’re hitting the triple-digit heat/humidity index, I’ve seen towns kick into action, (but) there’s uniqueness,” Jones said.
One additional factor will come into play this year as residents battle the heat: the rising cost of living.
“Certainly with high energy prices, more and more … people might be cutting back [on air conditioning], so that’s something we’ll have to monitor,” he said.
Still, at any time people can find shelter from the heat at many public buildings.
The Wheaton Police Department, for example, has air conditioning, water and rest rooms, and the lobby is open 24 hours, Deputy Chief Tom Meloni said.
