An initiative to address drunken driving resulted in charges against 12 motorists over a five-day period in Bolingbrook recently.
Between July 2 and July 6, police focused on a several traffic safety issues, with an emphasis on those who drive while drinking.
“It was a successful program, and we were able to hopefully take some drivers off the road who should not have been driving,” said Bolingbrook Police Sgt. Jim Coughlin.
“It was a good weekend (for enforcement),” he added.
According to Coughlin, the number of people charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol has doubled from 2007 to 2008.
Through June 30, 133 motorists have been charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol compared to 67 during the same time frame in 2007.
As part of the national Click it Or Ticket and statewide You Drink and Drive, You Lose campaigns, Bolingbrook police enforced a variety of safety issues such as seat belt use, driving while under the influence and child restraint seats.
