Riverside, IL -
In the midst of clinching at least a share of the Metro Suburban Conference title, Riverside Brookfield continued its progression of finding an offensive identity.
And that identity was nearly flawless in the Bulldogs' 63-19 win at Fenton on Friday night as R-B provided evidence that if junior quarterback Bill VandeMerkt receives time to throw the football, and the defense displays a complimentary effort, then the Class 6A scene may find a dangerous team come playoff time.
"We're figuring out what we're supposed to do and everyone is doing their job," said R-B junior quarterback Bill VandeMerkt, who threw a career-high eight touchdown passes. "We just keep building our chemisrty."
Although the game was sent into a running clock during the fourth quarter, the Bison (3-4, 2-2) took advantage of its opportunities early on. Fenton capped the opening drive of the game with an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Vince Esposito from quarterback Ricky Prignano, which put the Bison up 6-0 after the Bulldogs' Joe Swon blocked the extra point.
R-B (4-3, 4-0) responded with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter when VandeMerkt connected with wide receiver Will Lusthoff for a 28-yard touchdown. This led to the Bulldogs going on a 56-13 run.
"We had far too many mistakes and give R-B credit, they played hard," said Bison head coach Mark Farrell. "We needed to limit the big plays, defend the short stuff and defend the deep ball. And we didn't."
