Lyons Township's football team let a 14-0 lead slip away in dropping its season opener 17-14 Friday night in Western Springs.
The Lions (0-1) turned the ball over five times, including four fumbles, as they let Sandburg (1-0) back in the game with three big plays, including a 77-yard touchdown pass which cut the LT lead in half at 14-7 with 1:53 to go in the third quarter.
The Eagles tied the game on a one-yard run with 7:03 to go after a long 30-yard pass got it into LT territory. Sandburg then won the game on a 23-yard field goal in the first overtime after LT missed a field goal attempt of its own in overtime.
Ryan Mitchell, who was named starting quarterback earlier in the week, went 3-for-6 for 19 yards while running 29 times for 87 yards. David Bellisario, who was originally slated as the starting quarterback, instead started at halfback and ran nine times for 96 yards. Deonte Brown ran 18 times for 77 yards. Robert Ronovsky, Matt Polega and Rafal Redlinski all had sacks for LT, while Spencer Ellison had an interception.
