Brookfield, IL -

Throughout the mid-to-late 1980s, current Riverside Brookfield softball head coach Dan Hull was involved in pickup softball games at Brookfield’s Kiwanis Park.

Hull, then a Brookfield Police Department lieutenant, and many of his colleagues from the force tangled against youth softball traveling teams from the community.

“There were some battles,” recalled Hull.

Last summer, the tradition returned when the 12-and-under 2007 state champion Brookfield National Girls All-Stars took on a team made up the Brookfield Police and Fire departments.

The contest drew interest from the area, and the game ended in a tie after a remarkable finish. More importantly, Brookfield Fire Lt. Mark Duffek noted that the proceeds from the 50/50 raffle went to part-time Brookfield fireman Shawn Ligeikis, who was involved in an accident on 55th Street last summer.

Ligeikis was pinned between two cars during his full-time job with the Department of Public Works.

“We wanted to revitalize the game from the 1980s,” said Duffek. “It was a great way to help out Shawn (Ligeikis).

Duffek, whose daughter Jaimie recently finished her senior season with the Riverside Brookfield softball team, began developing ideas during the Bulldogs’ playoff run this past spring. After R-B fell 1-0 to Class 3A third place state finisher Glenbard South in the sectional championship on May 31, Duffek suggested to the team that they should take on the Brookfield Fire and Police departments this summer.

The Bulldogs accepted.

“We were all very interested,” said Jaimie Duffek, who will be playing softball at Drake University next year. “Last year was a good time. We’re all looking forward to having fun and I’d like to win.”

The game takes place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Kiwanis Park in Brookfield with the 50/50 raffle proceeds expected to go to the R-B softball program, Brookfield National Little League and the D.A.R.E program. The Brookfield VFW Post also will be selling concessions.

R-B’s Fallon Ryan, Regan Riley, Alison Durec and Samantha Pozzie won’t be taking part in the contest because they are currently playing travel ball in Colorado. Morgan Vogel also is still a question mark for the game because of her travel ball.

“I really don’t know what to expect,” Hull said. “But it will be fun and that’s what it’s all about.”
