Before they hit the stage in “The Wiz” later this month, Riverside Brookfield High School choir students tested out their vocals for Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Almost 70 students from four different RB choirs traveled to Orlando, Fla. from Feb. 18 to 21 to participate in a Disney Sings workshop, where the students learned choreography and performed songs from “The Lion King.”

Choir director Diane Marelli said the workshop taught her students skills they can carry into their careers.

“They practiced sight-reading skills, using their ears, vocal technique and stage presence,” Marelli said. “It amplified what they’ve learned in the classroom.”

Students Kristin Tomezek, a freshman in concert chorale, and Kaylee Weinert, a sophomore also in concert chorale, said the workshop was invaluable.

“The clinician gave us pointers on performing,” Tomezek said.

Weinert added that the workshop inspired a career.

“I want to perform at Disney — I really want to be Cinderella,” Weinert said. “They taught us to be flexible and step out of our comfort zone.”

Marelli said that March is a “huge” month for her four choir groups: treble bass choir, concert chorale, chamber choir and the Madrigal Singers.

The spring musical “The Wiz” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium March 18 and 19, and at 2 p.m. March 20. Tickets cost $7.

On March 23, the choir groups will perform in a free world music concert at 7 p.m. The concert is open to the public and will take place in the school auditorium. The school also will debut the Disney DVD created at the workshop.
