Improvements at the Indiana Harbor Belt (IHB) Railroad crossings at Cossitt and Lincoln avenue will require each crossing to be closed during renovation efforts.

Work will include the removal and replacement of the asphalt pavement at the railroad tracks in order to provide a smoother crossing.

The Lincoln Avenue crossing will be closed from June 7 to June 11; the Cossitt Avenue crossing will be closed from June 14 to June 18.

Only one of the crossings will be closed at a time so that the other crossing will be available for the detour route. While the Lincoln Avenue crossing is under construction, vehicles will be detoured to the Cossitt Avenue crossing just south of the intersection via Sawyer Avenue and Tilden Avenue.

Vehicles will be routed to the Lincoln Avenue crossing when the Cossitt Avenue crossing is closed.  Signs will be posted in the area designating the detour route for motorists. Should weather delay the project, the closure would occur on a subsequent day.

Please also note that a new State law became effective Jan. 1, regulating the use of cell phones. When driving through a construction zone, cell phone use is limited to hands-free operation only and texting is strictly prohibited. The La Grange Police Department will be enforcing this new law.

More information is available by calling Mike Bojovic, assistant director of public works at (708) 579-2328.
