Riverside students preparing for the ACT can get an extra edge this summer.
A new ACT prep class, called Ivy Insiders, is being offered at the Loyola Medical Center’s Maguire Center, 2160 S. First Avenue in Maywood. The first class was held on Monday, July 6.
The Ivy Insiders program was started in 2003 by Harvard University undergraduates as an innovative approach to standardized test taking. The program’s philosophy says that the best way to teach students how to take the ACT is to have students who have already taken the test teach those who are currently preparing.
The program is taught solely by Ivy League-caliber graduates and undergraduates.
In Riverside, courses will be taught by Nadia Danford, a 2008 graduate of Riverside Brookfield High School, now a sophomore and a biomedical engineering student at Yale University. She scored a perfect 36 on the ACT.
Along with Danford, Riverside Brookfield High School 2007 graduate Joe Kenahan, the Ivy Insiders Riverside Branch manager, will teach the program. Kenahan is now a junior physics student at Stanford University.
The classes will be offered in two sessions. The first session runs from July 6 to July 27. The first session will hold classes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The second session will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from Aug. 3 to Aug. 24.
The classroom course includes 18 hours of lecture and four exams. The cost of the classroom course for either session is $699. The second option is a hybrid course, which includes the 18 hours of lecture and four exams of the classroom course, but also includes four hours of one-on-one private tutoring. The hybrid course costs $999.
To sign up for either course, visit www.ivyinsiders.com and search the Riverside zip code, 60546.
