As its final collective push in community service, a local Girl Scout troop wanted to revamp a room for children.
Girl Scout Troop 1677, which will soon disband, decided to focus on Riverside’s Public Library’s Storytime Room.
Julia Mueller, 11, a member of the Troop, said when she was younger, she remembered frequenting the room for storytime. Julia and her fellow troop members said they wanted to help make the room a bit more fun.
After raising money selling Girl Scout cookies, the troop donated a table and chair set, handpainted to match the theme of the room, and two sets of 20 board books for infants Nov. 15.
“We donated them because we like the library and it is a special room,” Julia said.
Julia said the troop took a photo of the room to get an idea of how they would paint the table.
The troop decided the table would be light blue and decorated with flowers and butterflies to match the walls.
The storytime room was created in 2007 in memory of Carrie Chorzempa. Chorzempa died from cancer a couple years ago, leaving behind her two daughters and husband. Kosner and co-troop leader Linda Mueller met with Janice Fisher, library director, to learn about Chorzempa and what items would have meant the most to her.
“She loved reading to her daughters,” Kosner said. “The hard board books were on her wish list.”
The library requested the troop purchase a set of 20 so each child could have a copy and learn to recognize some of the words.
“We donated the board books because they were Carrie’s favorite and it is a whole series,” Mueller said.
Kosner said the project was something fun for the girls to do together one last time and the library will get years out of the books and table set.
“It is something that our troop hopes all the kids that come to the library come to enjoy,” Kosner said.
