Riverside Police Department has partnered with the Aging Well organization for a third year to provide better quality of life for senior residents.
Sgt. David Krull said the partnership provides services for the elderly including transportation, home repair, social services and other senior needs.
“On average, we probably handle about 15 referrals a year,” Krull said.
Rob Mapes, Aging Well coordinator, said the organization’s partnerships bring together businesses, older adults and government agencies.
“The police department has been really involved in a couple different ways,” Mapes said. “Police and fire are trained to identify at-risk older adults.”
Mapes said the organization engages older adults in surrounding communities and helps them become better connected with local government. He said Aging Well helps seniors live a more relaxing and worry-free life by hosting seminars on topics such as finances, identity theft, scams and managing property and assets.
“We develop with resources in the area and develop a curriculum,” Mapes said. “Sixty percent of (seniors) don’t have any plans on how to cover legal or health issues.”
Mapes said the police department also meets with and assists older adults to plan and improve health care and other needed services.
Krull said the department acts as a liaison in cases elder abuse or exploitation. The department takes an initial report and follows it by assisting seniors file a report.
