An Elmhurst artist displays a unique and timely exhibition at the Elmhurst Art Museum through mid-February.
Michael Klaus Schmidt, an Elmhurst Artists' Guild member, will have his original paintings and drawings reflecting American Islamic Art on exhibit through Feb. 11 in Elmhurst.
The exhibition will be held in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Gallery, located in the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 Cottage Hill Ave. The exhibition runs through Feb. 11. A reception, open to the public, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, with Schmidt in attendance.
In his quest to create a new genre of American Islamic Art, Schmidt strives to remain within Islamic guidelines. However, he follows his own artistic muse in choosing subject matter which appeals to him.
“With this simple formula, I hope to invent a new style which is accessible to all people, and to serve as a bridge between my American culture and my Islamic beliefs,” Schmidt explained.
These dynamics, working together, result in the delicate, but richly detailed “Hidden Stairway,” with ornate swirled ivy, reminiscent of Persian designs, covering a weathered stone staircase in a quiet garden wall. Other notable works include “Square Light”, which depicts the interior of the Ronneburg, a castle near Michael's birthplace in Germany. Using stark contrasts and intricate designs, the painting plays with positive and negative space in a unique way.
Schmidt currently has paintings and drawings on exhibit at the David Leonardis Gallery in Chicago through December 2010. During the past year, his artwork was shown at the International Muslim Artists' Exhibition, held at the Zeitgeist Multidisciplinary Arts Center in New Orleans, and internationally at the Real Colors art show at Albaylasan Art Center in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.
Artworks can be viewed and purchased at the reception and during regular museum hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. More information is available at www.elmhurstartistsguild.org and www.schmidt-gallery.com.
