The last Sunday before Christmas holds the promise of a visit from Santa; an original adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” at The Riverfront Playhouse; the “Nutcracker” ballet performed in St. Charles; and a holiday light show at Cosley Zoo in Wheaton.
‘Nutcracker’ magic
State Street Dance Studio presents its “Nutcracker” ballet with guest artists at 2 p.m. today in the Norris Cultural Arts Center on the campus of St. Charles East High School on Dunham Road off Route 64, St. Charles. The event will include pre-show performances by singers and musicians. Cast members range from age 5 through 85. More than 75 students and guest artists perform, including former Joffrey Ballet principal dancer Randy Herrera, Hedwig Dance’s Victor Alexander and Inaside Dance Chicago’s Michael Darnell as Dr. Drosselmeyer. For ticket details, visit statestreetdancestudio.com or call (630) 232-0444.
Santa goes Italian
La Sorella di Francesca will host Santa from 5 to 7 p.m. this evening at the Naperville restaurant. Kids will have the opportunity to visit Santa during their dinner at 18 W. Jefferson Ave. For details, visit www.miafrancesca.com or call (630) 961-2706.
Riverfront's ‘Christmas Carol’ twist
The Riverfront Playhouse presents the 18th consecutive year of “A Christmas Carol,” adapted from the Charles Dickens story by Riverfront veteran Jack Schultz, who wrote its nine songs. The theater is at 11-13 South Water Street Mall in downtown Aurora, a block west of Route 25 and across the river from the Paramount Theatre. The final performance is at 3 p.m. Directed by Sherry Winchester Schultz, the Riverfront show has become a tradition not only for the playhouse and many of the actors who revive their portrayals from year to year, as well as area families who return time and again to relive the unique, heartwarming and comic retelling. The premise has a traveling band of itinerant actors arrive on a circus wagon to tell the story. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for students and senior citizens, and $10 for children younger than 12. Reservations are recommended, because performances often sell out; call the box office at (630) 897-9496.
Light up your holiday season
Wheaton Park District’s Cosley Zoo turns the night bright with its Festival of Lights in a winter wonderland display from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Dec. 30. Admission is free during the festival; the more than 20,000 lights turn on at 3 p.m. daily at 1356 N. Gary Ave., Wheaton. For more information, www.cosleyzoo.org or call (630) 665-5534. One can buy hot cocoa and visit with the animals. Guests also can check out the Wild Side Gift Shop or pick from among 2,200 fresh Christmas trees, handmade wreaths and pine garlands, all to benefit Cosley, voted “Best Small Zoo” by Chicago magazine this year.
