Turn your love for tennis into helping out Catholic Charities and meet a few Blackhawks along the way at Hinsdale Racquet Club, or relax and enjoy “Foxfire” at the Geneva Underground Playhouse.
Go Hawks: ‘Nite at the Net’
You can hang out with Blackhawks players and their coach, Joel Quenneville, who will be master of ceremonies for the “Nite at the Net” benefit for Catholic Charities, kicking off with registration at 6 p.m. in the Hinsdale Racquet Club, 5730 S. Grant St., Hinsdale. The cost is $95 per individual or $175 per couple, which includes two hours of tennis drills, food and cocktails. If you want to forego the tennis and just enjoy the party, the cost is $60 per person. Raffles and auctions are part of the fun. Items include a trip to the Blackhawks locker room, tickets and signed jerseys. All proceeds go to Catholic Charities of Chicago’s “Neighbor in Need” program, assisting people with food, shelter and clothing. Each person who brings nonperishable food items will be entered into a drawing to receive a $50 Lettuce Entertain You gift card. For details or to register online, visit www.catholiccharities.net/tennisclassic.
‘Foxfire’ opens
The Geneva Underground Playhouse will present the Broadway hit “Foxfire.” The play by Susan Cooper and Hume Cronyn will be staged at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18, and at 3 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 4 and 11 and Sunday, Feb. 19. “Foxfire” is about Annie Nations, an indomitable Appalachian widow in her 70s, who lives on her mountain farm alone, where she often is visited by her deceased, acerbic husband, Hector — a ghost, or maybe just her memory of him. Annie’s tranquility is threatened by a real estate developer who wants to turn her land into a vacation resort, and also by concern over her son, Dillard, a country singer who has come home because his wife has run away. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors. They can be purchased with a credit card online at guptheatre.org, or with cash or check by calling (630) 677-1725. The Geneva Underground Playhouse is a nonprofit community theater at 524 W. State St., near the corner of Sixth and State streets.
