Mirroring efforts across the region, State Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero) and the Berwyn Development Corporation join local small business owners in encouraging residents to participate in “Small Business Saturday” on Nov. 26. It was created to help promote local businesses during the holiday shopping rush who are often unable to compete with larger retailers during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday sales.

“During these difficult economic times, we are seeing a lot of our friends, family and neighbors who run these local shops struggling to keep their doors open,” Hernandez says. “If we continue to work together to promote local businesses, our community will be able to maintain the unique qualities that make our area so special.”

Paul Zimmermann, president of the BDC, adds, “’Small Business Saturday’ captures the spirit of the BDC’s ‘Buy Berwyn’ chamber initiative, which encourages our residents to shop locally. We have a remarkable business community whose dedication keeps our communities vital and enjoyable. There is a rich story within every business, and we’ve been lucky enough to capture some of those stories in our new ‘WILD Berwyn’ Webisode series. We encourage our residents to find these stories too.”

The second annual “Small Business Saturday” is aimed at increasing turnout at local businesses during the busiest shopping weekend of the year. Communities all around the nation will participate in the promotion in an effort to encourage consumers to support their local small businesses, which are critical to the nation’s overall economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses in the United States create 65 percent of net new jobs.

“This great event will help our area promote economic growth and bring consumers, organizations and public officials together to increase small business awareness and support,” Hernandez says. “This is also a great opportunity for families to meet local business owners in their neighborhoods and work together to rebuild our economy and make our community stronger.”
