Villa Park, IL -

On the warmest day the area has seen in months, the man wearing the long-sleeved, bulky hockey jersey was the one garnering the most attention Tuesday.

It was for good reason. The man wearing the jersey was former Olympian Steve Alley, who arrived at the Iowa Community Center in Villa Park ready to entertain a crowd of campers during Villa Park’s “Olympic Day” Tuesday.

Alley was a member of the U.S. hockey team during the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.

“They were in awe when he showed up wearing his hockey jersey,” said Mikie Rudyk, Villa Park Recreation Department Program Supervisor.

The campers, including 12-year-old Dominic McDonnell from Oakbrook Terrace, decorated the gym in the community center Monday in an Olympic theme to welcome Alley.

“It’s cool that he came out,” McDonnell said. “He gave a lot of information about Chicago that I didn't know about.”

After Alley concluded showing off his puck-handling skills and playing floor hockey with campers. More than 40 campers headed outside to enjoy the warm day with their own Olympic events including kickball, basketball, and a version of “Duck, Duck, Goose” that involved pouring water on the campers’ heads.

After a trip to the pool to cool down, the campers watched a DVD from the Chicago Olympic campaign committee.

“It’d be fun for Chicago and the people around here,” McDonnell said.
