September is National Library Card Sign-up Month and the Villa Park Public Library wants to make sure that you have the smartest card of all — a library card.
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month encourages people to check out what’s new at their library by signing up for their own card.
The choice of September is no accident. It serves as a reminder to parents that a library card is the most important school supply they can get their child.
The Villa Park library is celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month by giving all Villa Park cardholders the opportunity to enter a free drawing for a $25 Staples gift card.
You enter simply by using your library card this month.
A library card is not all a person needs to use a library effectively. Other research tools often are needed.
The Villa Park library offers a program for children that teaches the basics of using the facility.
Library Lessons are one-hour appointments for students in third grade and higher.
The kids will learn the basics of using the library, including the iBistro catalog, homework-helper books and the library’s electronic resources. Lessons are tailored to the age and interests of each child. Parents and young students are encouraged to attend together.
Mark your calendars for the Friends of the Library Semi-Annual Book Sale, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 to 4.
This fall’s sale will include thousands of fiction and nonfiction books, videos, audio books and music CDs.
Many are donations in very good to like-new condition. All are available at bargain prices.
Hardbound books, audio books and videos are $1 each. Paperbacks and CDs are 50 cents each.
Several extra items will be sold at slightly higher prices, most for no more than $5. Saturday, Oct. 4, is bargain day, with a plastic bag of books selling for $5. All proceeds from the sale will be used to fund library programs.
The regular sale runs from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4. The sale is in the Ohrman Room. A special Friends-only preview sale will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2.
Book lovers are needed for a variety of tasks and time slots. The Friends are always looking for volunteers to help with the sale.
The November election is right around the corner, so if you’ve never registered to vote, or you’ve changed your address or name since the last election, or haven’t voted in the past five years, you must reregister to vote in the upcoming election.
Voters’ registrars will be on hand from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Monday and Tuesday throughout September.
You’ll need two pieces of identification, one with your current address and one with a current photo.
Naturalization papers are required for citizens born outside of the U.S.
