Those who want to memorialize lost loved ones in a unique way can do so by making a contribution to the Adventist St. Thomas Hospice in support of the Tree of Remembrance.

The tree will be illuminated from Nov. 27 to Jan. 2 in front of Harris Bank of Hinsdale, Lincoln and First streets.

Begun in 1993, the tribute tree is in remembrance of those identified by donors, and names of the deceased are placed on memorial boards adjacent to the tree.

Volunteers will decorate the tree Nov. 22, and the tree will first be illuminated Nov. 27

Funds raised go toward assisting uninsured families and provide bereavement support for community members.

Each year the tree memorializes more than 350 individuals, according to hospice officials.

“We hear stories from families who tell us that visiting the tree is an annual event,” said Rosie Cohen, the hospice’s bereavement coordinator. “They meet at the tree to look for their loved one’s name and then spend time together in downtown Hinsdale. It’s a wonderful way to remember someone.”

Gift envelopes are available inside the Harris Bank of Hinsdale, or by calling Adventist St. Thomas Hospice’s bereavement department at (630) 856-6993.

Donations may also be mailed to the attention of Tree of Remembrance at Adventist St. Thomas Hospice, 8230 S. Madison St., Burr Ridge, IL 60527.
