• The Lemont Artists Guild’s regular monthly meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Lemont Park District, 6028 127th St., Lemont. It will be followed by a demonstration of Painting a Colorful Landscape in Oils by artist Barbara Lipkin. They request a donation to help bring more programs to the community or a donation for the local food pantries. Refreshments will be served. • MOPS is a mothers group that provides support, fun and friendship to mothers of preschoolers. The first gathering is from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Christian Church of Clarendon Hills, 5750 Holmes Ave. Meetings take place the second and fourth Thursday of the month. • The Lemont Junior Woman’s Club is proud to offer the Safe Sitter Certification Program. The class is designed for 11- to 13-year-olds preparing to safely care for children. It’s an extensive two-day course taught by trained personnel. This will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 and Oct. 11, at the Lemont Safety Village, 55 Stephen St. Cost is $55 per person and includes lunch, snacks and supplies. • The Garden Club of Downers Grove will feature Patricia Armstrong presenting “Landscaping with Native Plants” at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, in the Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave., Room 503, Downers Grove. The presentation will include the use of native ornamental prairie grasses, wildflowers, trees and shrubs to create a prairie or woodland wildflower garden.

• The Nautical Research and Model Ship Society of Chicago meets on the second Saturday each month in Westmont. They welcome anybody with an interest in any of the many aspects of model ship building to attend meetings and become a member. Members are encouraged to bring their current projects to each meeting to show their fellow members their progress since the last meeting. • Over 225,000 residents of DuPage County who need assistance in learning to read, write and speak English face those situations on a daily basis. Literacy DuPage, formerly know as Literacy Volunteers of DuPage, help meet their needs by providing one-to-one and small group tutoring with volunteer tutors, at a time and location convenient for both the tutors and the adult learners. No teaching or tutoring experience is needed. The next tutor training series of six sessions will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Sept. 18, 23, 25, 30, Oct. 2, 16, at Nichols Public Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave., Naperville. • The Oak Brook Women’s Club is inviting the community to attend its annual Friendship Tea from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Butterfield Country Club, 2800 Midwest Road, Oak Brook. Cost is $30 per person and is open only to Oak Brook residents. Members and prospective members are welcome. There will be door prizes and special raffles.
