In looking at the Lyons Township boys soccer team’s record this season, one could expect the Lions to be the team to beat in the Class 3A Hinsdale Central sectional.

Riverside Brookfield boys soccer coach Danny Makaric watched as his team set out to make school history Saturday in the Riverside regional championship.

Then he watched as his players almost let it slip away.

Another complete team effort lifted Hinsdale Central’s girls tennis team to its fourth consecutive IHSA state title.

Brian Langford has never met Mark McDonagh, but he knows exactly what the Riverside Brookfield senior receiver is going through emotionally right now.

After all, it was Langford’s national high school record of 138 catches in a season that McDonagh broke in a 42-0 victory over Elmwood Park on Friday.

Mark McDonagh wanted to have the best season he could this year, but not even he expected to be putting up numbers like this. Through eight games, the RB senior has 143 catches, more than any other player in U.S. high school football history.

A serious knee injury forced Lyons Township senior Kevin Workman to miss last week’s Class 3A St. Ignatius regional, a tournament LT went on to win by two strokes over Fenwick.

But on Monday afternoon at the Mount Carmel sectional at Glenwoodie Golf Course, there Workman was — knee brace and all — ready to help the Lions earn a trip to the Class 3A state tournament.

There was a point during the La Grange Park Girls Golf Regional on Oct. 7 where Katie Ellis could have imploded.

Matt Meindl began golfing when he was 10 years old, but until Oct. 6, the Riverside Brookfield senior never won any event he took part in.

He sure picked a good time to get win No. 1.
