Berwyn resident Larry Baran will fulfill a long-time dream, singing the national anthem at the start of a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field.
Baran will perform at the team’s game against the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday. Baran will sing with colleagues Jeff Quinn of Lisle and VJ Comforte of Burr Ridge, fellow members of the band Jamestown Massacre.
“It’s definitely the high point of my career,” Baran said. “I always thought, ‘how do you get to do that? I can do that.’ ... It’s really an honor.”
Quinn echoed Baran’s enthusiasm at having the chance to perform at Wrigley.
“I’m a die-hard Cubs fan, so this is a big deal,” Quinn said.
The men’s band is best known for its 1972 hit “Summer Sun,” but more recently opened for the Buckinghams at the Berwyn Centennial Festival in June.
Baran has lived in Berwyn since 1992 and has been making music since long before that, playing in his first band more than four decades ago. He was living in Michigan when Jamestown Massacre first formed without him in the early ’70s and released their best known song.
Baran teamed up with Jamestown Massacre about five years ago, filling a guitarist vacancy. Quinn said Baran was exactly what the band was looking for, and for Baran, the opportunity was something he had been waiting for a long time.
“I thought it was about time I got into a really good band,” Baran said. “I’d been in a few of what I would consider to be good bands over the years, but just to be in a band that has a little bit of a name, it’s pretty cool.”
The Berwyn resident also plays with Mighty Moon Men, a recently formed progressive rock band, which primarily performs songs written by Baran.
Baran said singing the national anthem is nothing new to him and his Jamestown Massacre bandmates, who often start their shows with it.
“It’s nicer than a solo version because we have a really nice three-part harmony,” Baran said. “This is exciting. I feel pretty lucky.”
