In celebration of the holiday season, the Westmont Park District, the Village of Westmont and the Westmont Auto Mile are set to kick off the month-long Holly Days Festival. For a complete list of events, visit the Westmont Park District website at www.wpd4fun.org.

Santa and his reindeer
Holly Days begins on Friday, Nov. 26, with the Frosty and Friends Parade into downtown Westmont, followed by the tree- lighting at Westmont Centre, East Quincy Street and South Cass Avenue. The parade begins at 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Cass and Traube avenues and proceeds south to downtown Westmont. The parade will include various groups from the community and Santa, who will light the tree. “We are expecting one of the largest parades we have had in the past few years,” said Holly Days Committee Co-chairperson Kim Lojewski.

A season of sharing
This year’s Frosty and Friends Parade will feature something new. During the parade, volunteers will collect nonperishable food items to benefit the People’s Resource Center pantry in Westmont. Lojewski said anyone looking to donate can bring items to the parade, and members of the Westmont Special Events Corporation will be collecting the food while the parade proceeds.

Cars make it all happen
While sponsors were forced to make some budget cuts for Holly Days this year, the opening ceremonies will go on. This is in part the result of a new sponsorship from the Westmont Auto Mile, a partnership between the village and about a dozen car dealerships along Ogden Avenue that are donating to fund the parade and tree lighting. “Not only is the Westmont Auto Mile providing generous financial support for the event, but they will now have a bigger presence by providing cars in our Frosty & Friends Parade,” Lojewski said.

Weekly visits from Santa
Each Saturday night from 5 to 8 p.m. until Christmas, the Westmont Park District Senior Center will turn into Santa’s Workshop, with Santa and his elves visiting with children. There will also be entertainment by local performers and refreshments. The Gregg House Museum next door will have several holiday displays, and there will a holiday hay ride around the neighborhood. Two ice skating rings at Veterans Memorial Park will be available.

Get your running shoes on
Holly Days will also feature the annual Family 5K Run and Walk through downtown Westmont. Participants can register beginning at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the day of the race, at Westmont Centre. The race begins at 8 a.m. Awards and refreshments will be given at the end of the race. All ages and fitness levels are welcome to participate. For more information, call the park district at (630) 963-5252.
