The high school football season wrapped up with state championship games over the weekend, and now the Suburban Life honors the cream of the crop from Benet, Bolingbrook, Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South, Lemont, Lisle and Westmont for their performances this season.
LISLE – The upcoming boys basketball season marks a changing of the “guards” at Lisle. The entire Lions starting backcourt graduated following the 14-16 season, forcing head coach Mark LaScala to retool with underclassman and a first-year varsity player.
LISLE – Benet’s boys basketball team has its sights set on another conference championship and deep playoff run this winter. The Redwings are a combined 103-18 in the last four years, winning three East Suburban Catholic Conference championships in that time span.
LISLE – The Benet girls basketball team still remembers how close it was to a sectional appearance in February. Leading Naperville Central by 15 points at halftime in the regional championship game on Feb. 14, the Redwings let their lead slip away in the third and fourth quarters, eventually losing by two points.
LISLE – Nick Balaban describes his Lisle girls basketball team as a defensive powerhouse loaded with offensive potential. Taking over for Dan Murray – who left following a 24-6 (13-1 Interstate Eight Small) regular season and a trip to the regional finals – Balaban believes a tenacious defense is the key to another successful season and playoff run for the Lions.
MADISON, WI – Frank Kaminsky set a University of Wisconsin program record by scoring 43 points in the Badgers 103-85 win over North Dakota on Tuesday. The 2011 Benet graduate broke the previous mark of 42, set by Ken Barnes in 1965 against Indiana.
NORMAL – In its quest for a third consecutive state title, Benet's girls volleyball team fell just short in a 25-22, 25-19 loss to Mother McAuley in Saturday's Class 4A championship match at Redbird Arena. The Redwings finished the season with a 36-6 record. Mother McAuley finished 40-2 and did not lose to a team from Illinois all season.
NORMAL – Benet's girls volleyball team will play for its third consecutive state title after a 25-22, 25-18 win over Crystal Lake South in a Class 4A state semifinal Friday night at Redbird Arena. The Redwings (36-5) will face Mother McAuley (39-2) in the state championship match Saturday at 8:55 p.m.
LISLE – Benet’s Caroline Wolf understands that defense wins championships. Under the tutelage of Benet head coach Brad Baker, assistants Kyle Reid and Kim Sayers, and former Redwing liberos such as 2012 graduate Sheila Doyle, Wolf has developed the defensive moxie that defined the Redwings during back-to-back state title runs in 2011 and 2012.
With one of the best girls volleyball programs in the state, Benet continues to produce all-area nominations. But the talent is abundant on the South team, as Bolingbrook, Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central, HInsdale South, Lemont and Lisle and Westmont are also represented.
LISLE – The accolades keep pouring in for former Lisle starting pitcher Alex Ventrella. Five months after the lefty ace earned the win in the final game of the Lions’ state championship run, the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association named Ventrella the Class 2A Player of the Year.
The 2013 boys soccer season brought with it conference championships, deep playoff runs and some memorable moments for players teams throughout the area. We honor some of the best players with our 2013 all-area team.
CHICAGO – A promising start to Benet’s football season is now a distant memory. After winning six straight games to begin the regular season, the Redwings dropped the next four contests, including a 49-6 defeat against Mt. Carmel in the first round of the 7A playoffs Friday night.
