Huntley, IL -

Children and adults alike are devoted fans of Dr. Seuss’s books. These days it seems I rarely go a day or more without reading from “Green Eggs and Ham” or “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?” to my kids, so I was excited to hear that a production of “Seussical Jr.The Musical” was coming to Huntley.

“Seussical Jr.” explores the witty, wild and whimsical world of Dr. Seuss through song.

The musical promises to take viewers on a journey back to childhood to the Land of Whos and the Jungle of Nool and re-discover the delightfully zany characters created by one of the most beloved storytellers of all time. Seussical has been called the “best family musical to hit Broadway in a long, long time,” and children and adults can enjoy this fun, exciting show.

The musical will be performed by the Christian Youth Theater of Chicago, and performances take place at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16; 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $9 for children 2 through 17 when purchased in advance. Door prices are $2 higher per ticket. Tickets may be purchased by phone at (847) 516-2298, or via the Christian Youth Theater’s Web site at www.cytchicago.org.

McHenry Outdoor Theater opens for the season

Our family loves going to the drive-in. It’s become a summertime routine for us — dress the kids in their pajamas, load the car with snacks and head up to McHenry for a night at the movies in the comfort of our vehicle.

The McHenry Outdoor Theater is one of only 12 drive-in movie theaters left in Illinois. It opened last weekend for its 53rd season presenting movies under the stars. Now open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (the theater opens nightly during the summer) patrons can enjoy two features for the price of one.

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about the McHenry Outdoor Theater — intermissions still feature the dancing hot dog and Popsicles, with “Eight minutes until showtime” booming over the speakers. And while you can still listen to the movie via a steel speaker on a pole, the theater also broadcasts in stereo surround sound on an FM frequency that you can tune into from your auto sound system, so that you’re not missing out on the spectacular sounds of the summer action blockbusters. It’s a fun place for the entire family, and children never seem to get tired of the thrill of watching a movie from the car.

The McHenry Outdoor Theater is located at 1510 N. Chapel Hill Road in McHenry, a half-mile north of Route 120. For showtimes and features, call (815) 385-0144.
