1. How did the school board develop these goals?
The DuPage High School District 88 Board of Education developed long-term goals for Superintendent Dr. Steve Humphrey with community input during the Vision and Strategic Planning Process. The four key areas focus on student performance, professional growth, community partnerships, and facilities that support changing technology and learning. Dr. Humphrey’s priority areas concentrate on these needs identified by the communities District 88 serves.
2. How do you measure successful completion of the goals?
The District 88 mission “to work for the continuous improvement of student achievement” is an ongoing commitment demonstrated by the school community. The Board of Education receives data reports on a regular basis from the administration and schools during board meetings and leadership workshops. Success of our long-term goals can be measured by such evidence including recognition of Addison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools in Newsweek’s ranking of the top 6 percent of public schools in the nation, significant growth on standardized testing and achieving Adequate Yearly Progress as measured by No Child Left Behind, community support of the “Building the Future” referendum to renovate and enhance facilities; and on-going partnerships with parents, feeder school districts and post-secondary institutions, intergovernmental agencies, business partners and civic organizations.
3. What role does the public have in holding the superintendent accountable for the goals?
The goals established with the community through the Vision process create accountability.
The televised Board of Education meetings twice a month provide an opportunity to receive regular updates about District 88 programs and initiatives. Acting on behalf of the constituents who elected us to public office, it is the responsibility of all seven board members to hold the superintendent accountable for the district goals.
Dr. Humphrey, who reports directly to the Board of Education, demonstrates his leadership through constant interaction with the public to acknowledge concerns, answer questions and identify their priorities and future needs. Board members welcome and actively seek input from residents through district committees like the Citizen’s Advisory Council, Building The Future Advisory and Finance Committees, and business partnerships as well as via e-mail.
Board members also have an active presence at school events where they can interact with parents, faculty, and students alike to gather insight into practices, needs, and visions for the schools. The public is also offered an opportunity at every board meeting to voice their questions and comments regarding the superintendent’s performance or other school matters.
4. How will public access to the goals influence how they are created in the future?
With District 88 on schedule to complete “Building the Future” in the fall of 2010, this school year provides an important opportunity to solicit community input regarding the future direction for Addison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools. Residents will have opportunities to participate in the next Vision and Strategic Planning Process in February. Community members are encouraged to participate in this most important dialogue.
