Marengo, IL -

1. How did the school board develop these goals?
About five years ago the district adopted the process of using SMART (Specific and Strategic, Measurable, Attainable, Results-Based and Time-Bound) goals. Each of the administrators submit what they think their goals are for the year. (The School Board) sits down and reviews that and looks at them as to their relevancy, how important they are, and what our goals are. The School Board develops our own goals.

2. How do you measure successful completion of the goals?
When you use the SMART goals method, you list your goals and you also list measures of success. Then you list five or six items there as to what you think you need to do in order to make your goals and assign it a due date. Some goals take several years to complete. Some are quick and you can get those done in one school year. When we talk about instruction and curriculum, that is an ongoing goal. We do set, for example, test scores. We want to reach a certain test score — that would be a measure of success. So you know it up front.

3. What role does the public have in holding the superintendent accountable for the goals?
Our operational goals are on the district’s Web site and anybody can look at that and see what our plan is for a (given) year.

4. How will public access to the goals influence how they are created in the future?
The public is always invited to come to our meetings. It’s an open forum. In our meetings there are two separate items on the agenda for comments from the public. (The public) can very easily come to a board meeting and voice their opinion or contact the superintendent directly.
