Marengo, IL -

Q: How did the school board develop these goals?
A: The District goals are developed by the board in concert with the Superintendent and Administrative Board with input from the entire LT community including the Lyons Township Community Advisory Council, Parent Teachers Association, teachers, etc. In the end the goals are all about kids, trying to develop the best learning community and environment. This year, the two main focuses will be on the Professional Learning Community and the district-wide Data Consortium.

Q: How do you measure successful completion of the goals?
A: The superintendent reports back to us on how well they have done. They give us updates every couple board meetings. We have discussions on if those goals need modification. We develop goals now that are multi-year. We look at the results of tests.

Q: What role does the public have in holding the superintendent accountable for the goals?
A: The public’s role is in electing a school board to represent them. The school board then makes these judgments. The public has in the past sent letters to the board and/or school. They often express their views to board members.

Q: How will public access to the goals influence how they are created in the future?
A: I do not see a great deal of change with the new public access laws. We already seek public input for the creation of district goals. Most of what we do is published. We do not hide from the public. The Open Meetings Laws have been in effect and been followed for decades. Most of the problems have been at the state level where the big money is.
