1. How did the school board develop these goals?
The District 99 School Board developed our goals in partnership with the staff and administration of the district. We consider immediate and long term needs of the district. We also create only three or four at a time, to make them more achievable. School Board members are also in touch with community members with their concerns and interests. When necessary, the superintendent has convened a community/staff committee to discuss appropriate actions for the district.
2. How do you measure successful completion of the goals?
The board includes indicators or benchmarks with each goal. Our goals are always multi-year, usually three-year. We review them in the fall and early winter of each school year to measure our progress.
3. What role does the public have in holding the superintendent accountable for the goals?
It is really the fiduciary duty of the Board of Education to supervise and evaluate the superintendent’s progress in goal achievement, followed by appropriate action. Community members may let us know — and we will listen to them — if they have concerns. But, ultimately it is the board’s responsibility to hold him accountable.
4. How will public access to the goals influence how they are created in the future?
Since our district Web site has become more and more interactive, I anticipate that community members may more readily volunteer more input to goal creation. Also, since our goals tend to remain active for several years, (ie: improving student achievement), citizens may offer suggestions less often.
