Brookfield, IL -

A year after a couple in North Carolina lost their family pet, they received a phone call saying she had been found — in Brookfield.

Brookfield resident Tricia Roman said she was walking through her yard Aug. 5 after storms had lashed the area when she saw what appeared to be a stray cat. Roman put up fliers and called people in the neighborhood to see if anyone had lost their cat, but no one came forward.

A few days later, Roman went to Merrick Animal Hospital in Brookfield to take her own cats to see the veterinarian. She was told that if she caught the cat, she could bring it in to be scanned for a microchip.

“On Saturday, we found she had a chip,” Roman said. “She was from North Carolina, and we thought maybe they just moved here.”

A phone call was made by Roman to the owners, the McMillans, who told her they still resided in North Carolina. When Roman started describing the cat, the McMillans said, “That’s my Sukie.”
