Two pit bulls are expected to survive after Lombard police broke up a dogfight and arrested four Lombard residents early Saturday morning.

Both dogs were bloody and injured and were taken to an emergency veterinarian by DuPage County Animal Control. Officers were unable to separate the dogs, and had to use a Taser to stun them, police said.

The dogs, who are in police custody while the case is being investigated, are now being held at the DuPage County Animal Hospital.

Lombard police were called to the 300 block of North Grace Street at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday after residents alerted police to what sounded like dogs fighting and individuals cheering the animals on.

Officers walked into the backyard of 383 N. Grace St. and found two pit bulls fighting, said Lombard Deputy Police Chief Dane Cuny.

Cuny said this was the first dogfighting case in Lombard in recent memory.

“We’re working with the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office to determine the status of the dogs and what will happen to them,” Cuny said.

A representative from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office was not immediately available for comment.

Robert Kollman, 21, of 383 N. Grace St. in Lombard, and Brian Moll, 22, of 135 S. Lombard Ave. in Lombard, were charged with felony dogfighting and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Police said alcohol was being consumed at the party.

They were both taken to DuPage County Jail after the incident. Kollman was released on $1,000 bail with a June 1 court date, and Moll is being held on $2,000 bail with a scheduled court date of June 22.

Kevin Olsen, 20, of 930 S. Main St. in Lombard, and Benjamin Jones, 20, of 319 W. Harding Road in Lombard were charged with misdemeanor dogfighting after police said they knowingly attended a dogfight.

They also were charged with underage drinking and taken to the Lombard Police Department where they were released on cash bail.

Kerry Vinkler, executive director of the DuPage County Animal Control said dogfighting is a rare occurrence in the county.

She said she would like to promote education for potential pit bull owners and ways residents can spot potential dogfighting.

“The whole point of any dog ownership is setting them up for success,” Vinkler said.
