Athletes hit trifecta in Naperville

ELMHURST, IL -

Local residents took to the water and streets of Naperville last Sunday to take part in the U.S. Women’s Triathlon Series. It was the first stop on a four-city national series, which continues in Washington, California and Texas.

This was the ninth year of the event. The proceeds benefited The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, which focuses on early diagnosis and treatment, as well as research toward a cure.

Over 2,000 competitors took part in a nearly half-mile swim, a 13.6-mile bike ride and a 5K run.

Elmhurst resident Kareen Ripperda, 38, had the top local finish as she completed the triathlon in 1 hour, 18 minutes, three seconds. That placed her second out of 408 competitors in her division and 23rd overall.

Ripperda had a 14:02 swim, 38:39 bike and 20:08 run.

Kelli Marti wasn’t far behind as she placed 11th in the same division and 58th overall in 1:22.25.

Sheryl Larsen (1:22.33) was 72nd overall and seventh in her division of 206 competitors, while Jessica Urgo (1:23.37) was 73rd overall and sixth in a division of 102 competitors.

Other Elmhurst residents in the top-500 were Monica Caster (1:30:05), Audra Stanley (1:31:01), Paula Sullivan (1:32:07), Katie Travers (1:32:12), Donna Schwan (1:32:37), Michelle Milani (1:33:13), Tracey Bianchi (1:34:17) and Nuala Maloney-Murphy (1:35:10).

Elmhurst finishers from 500-750 were Marykate Martinelli (1:36:35), Kathleen Durkin (1:37:14), Christine Juneman (1:37:58), Rachel Miller (1:38:29), Teresa Wittmer (1:39:06), Julie Travers (1:39:34), Dana Sidoryk (1:39:50), Janet Doherty (1:40:11), Catherine Gruener (1:40:16) and Gina O’Leary (1:40:22).

Tri-athletes from Elmhurst who finished between 750-1,000 were Debby O’Malley (1:41:14), Julie Kastholm (1:41:41), Kate Birkis (1:41:51), Alisha Venetis (1:42:53), Joann Callahan (1:43:33), Julie Siegenthaler (1:44:11), Kathy Orange (1:44:35), Sue Markuson (1:45:00) and Jodi Leonard (1:45:28).

Elmhurst competitors who were between 1,000-1,900 were Kathryn Muno (1:46:17), Amy Ryan (1:47:04), Misty McNeill (1:47:58), Judith Polkow (1:48:22), Meghan Clancy (1:48:53), Danielle Lasater (1:49:19), Vicki Trajcevski (1:49:54), Michelle Haller (1:50:17), Katie Gallagher (1:50:18), Jennifer Baxa (1:50:36), Laura Warnke (1:51:03), Michelle Paist (1:51:50), Lindy Schrik (1:53:37), Laura Walker (1:54:11), Susan Slavin (1:54:23), Mariann Mapes (1:56:23), Tricia Hobbs (1:59:26), Kimberly McBride (2:01:25), Sue Hardek (2:02:44) and Marylou Lasater (2:23:49).

Lombard resident Karen Crotty completed the three legs of the triathlon in 1:27.15 (136th overall).

Other Lombard residents who competed in the triathlon were Elizabeth Staerk (1:37:14), Katie Baldwin (1:37:57), Catie Williams (1:39:11), Martha Kuhr (1:45:39), Audrey Esposito (1:48:49), Karyn Byrne (1:49:42), Erin Pieta (1:50:01), Jessica Jindra (1:51:39), Beth Brand (1:52:04), Amy Boerema (1:52:09) and Lisa Wallace-Keith (2:07:05).

Kris Lundine was the top Villa Park resident finisher, taking 27th out of 206 in her division and 274th overall in a time of 1:31.15.

Other Villa Park tri-athletes were Janet Jackson (1:45.23), Lindsey Anders (1:57.37), Laura Rudnick (2:03.16), Maureen Schmidt (2:06.13) and Mary Noto (2:13.58).
