The husband and 6-year-old son of a Carol Stream woman who died from a stroke will receive a $5.3 million settlement in a DuPage County medical malpractice suit.

Chris Medina filed the suit on behalf of his wife, Samantha, who died in December 2006 at age 24. Medina’s attorneys from Hurley, McKenna & Mertz of Chicago said Samantha Medina’s physicians failed to diagnose the woman’s stroke and did not begin treatment, which would have saved her.

At 8:15 a.m. Dec. 10, 2006, Samantha Medina experienced the sudden onset of a headache and numbness on her right side. She went to the emergency room at Central DuPage Hospital. She died 16 days later.

The settlement will be paid on behalf of radiologist Dr. Mark Kelly and his practice, Winfield Radiology Consultants, S.C.; Dr. Henry Echiverri and his practice, Neuromed Clinic, LLC; and Central DuPage Hospital.

Representatives from Central DuPage Hospital said they are “deeply sorry for the family’s loss, but are unable to comment further regarding this matter.”
